Buying En Primeur

Would you like to buy wine ‘en primeur’ with other members of the Wine Tasting Group? For those in the dark, en primeur (or "wine futures") is a method of purchasing wines early while a vintage is still in a barrel, offering the customer the opportunity to invest in a particular wine before it is bottled. Payment is made at an early stage, between 1 and 3 years prior to the official release of a vintage, with the inevitable advantage of buying wines that are, in most cases, considerably cheaper during the en primeur period than they will be once bottled and released on the market. A further advantage of buying wine en primeur is that certain wines are only available in very limited quantities and can be sold out entirely in their en primeur stage! The wines most commonly offered en primeur are from Bordeaux, with limited quantities also from Burgundy, the Rhône Valley and Italy, although other regions are starting to adopt the practice.

Certain members of the Wine Tasting Group already have experience of successfully purchasing wine en primeur.  We are proposing therefore to use their experience and put together a small group of members who are interested in purchasing a number of bottles (likely minimum quantity will be 6) of Bordeaux wine this way in 2010.  En primeur offers are usually made in around June for the previous years vintage, and so we will need to gauge the level of interest in the club before this date for the 2009 vintage.  If you are interested in being a part of this purchasing group please contact Graham Piercy at one of the wine tastings.
